The Bohemian composer Wenzel (Weceslaw) Thomas Matiegka (1773-1830)wrote various works for the flute, but none so gloriously tuneful and eccentric as his Notturno, Opus 21, for flute, viola and guitar. It has long been a favourite work of mine and, I’d imagine, many others. I’ve arranged the Lento and Zingara (or Gypsy Song) for flute choir (including alto and bass flutes), as they make a marvellous addition to the concert repertoire. Don’t be shy to fling the speed around a bit in the Zingara, which is a brilliant contrast to the melancholy Lento.
