The Bohemian composer Wenzel (Weceslaw) Thomas Matiegka (1773-1830) wrote various works for the flute, but none so gloriously tuneful and eccentric as his Notturno, Opus 21, for flute, viola and guitar. It has long been a favourite work of mine and, I’d imagine, many others. There are five delightfully tuneful movements, and in this arrangement the alto flute valiantly takes the place of the viola (with suitable changes). The guitar part has been filled out to produce a workable piano part, but try to make the instrument sound as guitar-like (!) as possible. Don’t be shy to give the Zingara its gypsy passion.
