They are: The Lament of Flora MacDonald; Came ye o’er from France?; Frae the Friends and Land I love; Kirn-Milk Geordie; The Highlander’s Farewell. ’Came ye o’er’ is a real winner: apart from ’Kirn-Milk Geordie’, it the only fast piece. ’Frae the Land’ is counterpointed later on by that other song of intense loss, ’Will he no come back again’ (which appears independently in Set 1); while in ’Kirn-Milk Geordie’ you may notice that the Hanoverians attempt to hijack the piccolo by making it whistle their war-song ’Lillibulero’. They are soon silenced, however, and the Jacobite tune then turns into a jaunty Scottish country dance. Song source: James Hogg, The Jacobite Relics of Scotland, Being the Songs, Airs, and Legends of the House of Stuart, vols 1 and 2 (1819, 1821).
