The picc part is as in the original, fl 1 and 2 largely follow the oboes, fl 3 fills in various bits, and the lower instruments (mainly viola and cellos/basses) are shared by the afl and bfl. The march appears as no 4 of the incidental music (1811) for Kotzebue’s play Die Ruinen von Athen, premiered in 1812. It is best known in this orchestral version, but appeared first as the theme to Beethoven’s 6 variations in D for piano (Op. 76) of 1809.
