The original is a courtly dancing manual in the form of a dialogue between Arbeau himself and Capriol, his interlocutor. In the course of instructing Capriol in the types of dance, Arbeau includes tunes with their steps and gestures. Warlock mainly chose the best ones, and I have therefore followed him in most of them. Here, for Flute Choir plus drum and tambourine (or anything that will do the job!) are 5 movements, all reharmonised from the original melodies, except for the Pavane, for which Arbeau supplies the 4 parts. My final movement, Branles, amalgamates various tunes under that name given by Arbeau - one of them, the Branle l’official, very familiar in a somewhat different context! Great fun. But adjust my given tempi to suit the piccolo, who often has the melody, but whose flourishes are added by me in accordance with renaissance practice.
