One of the most enchanting orchestral solos for flute, this piece needs little introduction. It is the Intermezzo (Entr’acte) from Carmen (1875) as found in the Carmen Suite no 1, which was arranged by Bizet’s friend Ernest Giraud and published in 1882. The current arrangement is for 5 flutes, which seems to be the smallest number needed to do some kind of justice to the original score. A certain winner with audiences, it is over in a dreamlike whisper of a moment.
