The Six Epigraphes antiques for piano, four hands, were written in 1914, and published the year after. I have arranged the first and last - Invocation to Pan, and Thanks for the morning rain - for flutes as they have an obvious affinity with the solo flute Syrinx of the previous year. The more difficult of the two arrangements is the second, where flutes 1 and 2 have a monotonously difficult time of it counting their way steadily through the repetitions of the semiquavers - all pianissimo and in imitation of the pattering of a gentle early morning summer rain. They haven’t been arranged before, so far as I can see, and I hope that all parts will find that they have something interesting to do.
