Johann Christian Fischer, virtuoso German oboist and composer, moved to London in the late 1760s, played in the Bach-Abel concerts, and was much celebrated for his oboe concertos. No 2 in E flat is equally as tuneful and joyous as the perhaps better-known no 1 in C. My arrangement of No 2 will, I hope, make it available to more players. Transposed into F as a better key for flutes, I have arranged it from my own copy of the London, n.d. (circa 1780?) version for solo harpsichord, probably by J.C.Bach, and engagingly entitled ’a favourite concerto for the hautboy’. I bought my copy from a secondhand shop in Oxford in 1962 for 6 old pence when I was an ardent oboist and rehearsing no 1 for a concert. A lucky find. Those were the days!
