The Shenandoah referred to in the title (and the lyrics, missing here) was an Indian chief who lived adjacent to the Missouri River. The lyrics tell of a white man who loved the chief’s daughter, but whose suit was forcefully opposed by the chief. Some versions have the suitor pining away for the Indian maiden, others have him getting the chief drunk on whiskey and stealing the maiden away.
