I first met Celedonio, Celn, Pepe, and Angel Romero (the famous "Royal Family of the Spanish Guitar") after a concert in San Diego in 1971 while I was studying for my master's degree in conducting. A short time afterwards, I sat in while Angel Romero, prior to his conducting debut in the Concierto Aranjuez with his brother Pepe as soloist, took a few conducting lessons from my mentor, Zoltan Roznyai. By the time Pepe soloed in Rodrigo's "Fantasa para un Gentilhombre" with my own orchestra in 1975, I had collected every recording of theirs released in the United States. On one of the albums was the second movement of the Telemann Concerto for Four Guitars. I was already familiar with its original version as a concerto for four violins, but fell in love with the guitar version, and was sorry the other three movements had not been recorded as well. The Romeros finally did record the other three movements in 1978, but back in 1975, I was teaching a beginning group guitar class that included several accomplished string players from my orchestra. These experienced orchestral musicians quickly passed the rest of the members of the class, and needed a work that would challenge them. I pulled out the old violin concerto (which some of them also knew in its original form) and edited the entire score for this advanced student ensemble. They played it at the end of their first year of study. The score above (with one or two embellishments) is the Sibelius version of the arrangement I worked out for those students (and have used with several advanced student ensembles since). I hope you enjoy it. Except for dynamics, some ornamentation, and a few ligados, I have left this edition fairly naked. I may submit another version later containing suggested fingerings. My other guitar arrangement is a trio version of Sor's Etude in C (See below). Visit my website at: http://members.sibeliusmusic.com/jjacklich/ to see my other arrangements (mainly for string quartet).
