’Blow the Man Down’ is a traditional Sea Shanty. The words ’blow the man down’ refer to knocking a man down and refers to the often brutal treatment of common sailors, especially on tea ships where speed meant money. Sailors slow to respond to orders or to get their assigned tasks done quickly cost the owners time and money, and such sailors were often "blown down’. Use of the whip was not uncommon.

This is one of many pieces on a naval theme that have been arranged for the annual Navy Birthday Ball at NAF, El Centro, in October, 2007.
