Here Mrs Peachum, suspecting that her daughter Polly has already married her highwayman lover, MacHeath, is reflecting on the position of a wife in the segment of society she moves in - and comes to the conclusion that it is no bad fate.

Both recorder players are used here, but the oboe, one bassoon, the viola and double bass are resting.

The original of this tune is a popular song found in Irish and American collections as well as in D'Urfey's famous Pills to Purge Melancholy, and is entitled "Of All The Simple Tings We Do"
