This is the long farewell between Polly and MacHeath before he goes into hiding. In fact, MacHeath's idea of going into hiding is to retire to a nearby pub and surround himself with women, but Polly doesn't know that.

The recorder parts lie extremely high for the instruments specified, but they were played on treble and tenor in the original performance of this version; do feel free to move on to descant and treble if it's a problem.

The original of the tune was a Scots air entitled "Gin thou wert mune awn thing"
