Mrs Peachum is still very angry with her daughter because she has had the temerity to marry for love! This tune is closely associated with the words "Golden Slumbers Kiss your Eyes", so it might come as a surprise to see the beginning of it so starkly arranged; however, the original song was entitled "O Jenny, O Jenny, where hast thou been?" and though I can't trace the rest of the words, it seemed appropriate to start it fast since the singer is still angry.
