There are worse things about being incarcerated in Newgate Prison than one's imminent hanging? Indeed, thinks MacHeath - because the prison governor is one Mr Lockit, and his daughter Lucy is just one of many girls seduced and abandoned by MacHeath, and here she is come to gloat over his downfall.

The speed is tricky here, and it should go as fast is is possible for the singer to get the words out clearly. But Lucy is spitting feathers so spitting out the words is not inappropriate!

The tune is a (rather racy) song well-known at the time, called A Lovely Lass to a Friar Came.

A lovely lass to a friar came/To confess in the morning early In what, my dear, are you to blame?/Come tell to me sincerely I have done, sir, what I dare not name/With a lad that loves me dearly
