This is music for the change of scene from the tavern to Newgate Prison, where MacHeath is about to be installed. The irony should be obvious: in no. 19 he sang about the sensuous pleasures of women. His views have now changed! so here we have a grotesque parody of the same tune.

If you are substituting the second bassoon with a cello, the phrases marked with cue notes should all be played by the one bassoon player.
