The sopranino recorder here, sounding two octaves above the oboe, gives a kind of bosun's-whistle effect. The guitar is absolutely crucial here because it supports the harmony, so if you haven't a guitarist it must be substituted with a keyboard instrument; the bassoon may, as usual, be substituted with a cello. I was rather fond of the short wayward viola solo.
The original of the song is just described as "Oh Thomas, I cannot, &c." but I can't trace the rest of the words.
