Polly explains to her angry parents why she has married the Highwayman MacHeath.

The original melody used for this air was entitled "Grim King of the Ghosts", which is perhaps why I ended up giving it this slightly eerie muted-string accompaniment.

Sections of the bass part could be played an octave higher ad lib if the player's technique and intonation are up to it; alternatively it could be given to one of the bassoons or to a cello if one is substituting for a cello.
