Filch, a young pickpocket and general dogsbody for Peachum, has come to bring him all the latest news from the prisons and law courts, where various criminals under his "protection" are awaiting trial. Here they are musing on the control that women have over their lives and careers.

The second recorder and the second bassoon, together with the percussionist, are having a rest here.

The original of this tune is a harpsichord piece by Jeremiah Clarke called "The Bonny Gray-ey'd Morn", possibly, in its turn, based on a popular tune of the day.
