Here we meet Peachum's wife, who has overheard him planning to "black-list" one of his less efficient thieves who is also a friend of hers; however, she contents herself with thinking how handsome he will look on his way to the gallows!

In this number the oboe player and the guitar player are having a rest; the recorder players, who have brought an entire case-full with them, are adding a gentle coo to a rather biting arrangement by using tenors.

The original of this tune is a popular song, reputed to be a favourite of Elizabeth I, called "Cold and Raw"
