Although John Gay's Beggar's Opera was based on popular tunes of the day, he employed a German musician, John Christopher Pepusch, to make arrangements and to supply an overture. Pepusch's original overture had a slow introduction in the manner of the day, bit I chose to start from the fast section. This arrangement was used for a performance of The Beggar's Opera in 1981, and the orchestration reflects the orchestra which we used at the time - hence the two bassoons (one of these can easily be substituted by a cello) and the guitar and percussion.
