Written while Wesley was organist and Master of the Choristers at Winchester, ’expressly for a service in aid of Church missions’, Ascribe unto the Lord was first performed on 21 December 1851. It was first published in Wesley’s Twelve Anthems (Novello, 1853), pp. 10-43, where it is placed after Cast me not away. The present edition is transcribed from this first edition, with the original dynamics, tempi, etc. retained. Typical Wesley in its melodic exuberance, sensitivity to the texts, delight in the choral and solo textures, and lush chromatic harmonies and suspensions, it is, for me as for so many others, irresistible.
