It was first published in Wesley’s Twelve Anthems (Novello, 1853), pp. 10-43, where it is placed after Cast me not away. The present edition is transcribed from this first edition, with the original dynamics, tempi, etc. retained. Typical Wesley in its melodic exuberance, sensitivity to the texts, delight in the choral and solo textures, and lush chromatic harmonies and suspensions, it is, for me as for so many others, irresistible.
