Originally published by Hall, Virtue and Co. the same year, it was republished by Novello’s in 1868 with various errors corrected. Like so many of Wesley’s longer anthems, this is rarely heard now except for the overused final verse, ’Lead me, Lord’. But the whole anthem is glorious, and that alto solo is truly haunting when heard in context, as the F# major chord of the preceding chorus melts into the soloist’s F# (in D). This edition is the revised text; the very few editorial suggestions for dynamics are in brackets.
