This Ash Wednesday and Lenten anthem is a standard piece in the choral repertoire and so needs little introduction. The version offered here is, however, of particular interest in being set from the first published edition, the Twelve Anthems of 1853. We usually sing the revised (1863) version. The 1853 version differs very little, in fact. But note that in bars 30-1 (1853) the altos repeat all, all on their E ntaural with the tenors; whereas in later edns the E is tied and all sung once only. All dynamics as in original, with any variation marked in square brackets. The original organ part is followed as exactly as possible, with only a few minor transpositions of a left hand voice to rh and vice versa. Punctuation of the text is modernised (there is virtually none in the original). Note, however, that I have retained one important instance of 1853 punctuation at bar 94: the full stop here seems to suggest an emphatic pause, one longer than that at 87; this in turn suggests a very piano, almost coda-like, treatment of the final 7 bars.
