It should be sung as simply and gently as possible, with special care given to dynamics in the final stanza, where the shepherds all leave for Bethlehem and its manger: let us depart (transeamus). This exhortation is repeated, growing gradually fainter as they disappear into the distance and the silence of mystery. The final bar’s silence and pause are essential and most effective in performance, guaranteeing (almost!) quietness from those listening as the magic of the mystery sinks in. (Res miranda: thing to be marvelled at; pari forma: of the same form).
