A little known seventeenth-century Neapolitan carol with an utterly lovely melody, ideal for worship or the quiet moment in any Christmas or Easter concert. I have arranged it from the original melody and ground bass for 4-part choir and keyboard - ideally spinet or clavichord with a cello for the basso ostinato, and I have translated stanzas 1,2 and 7 of the original text. I first fell in love with the piece some 60 years ago when, as a boy, I performed it with solo treble, recorder and cello. It is now becoming less unknown after the 2010 release, of the CD Via Crucis by L’Arpeggiata and Philippe Jaroussky. The present arrangement and translation update and replace my original 2009 version.
