Johney Cock thy Beavor, an anonymous Scottish air from John Playford, ed. The Division Flute (1706), itself an arrangement for flute and bass of his The Division Violin (1685). As with all the folk melodies selected by Playford, the 'divisions' (variations) are accompanied by a simple ground bass. In the present instance there are 3 different but similar grounds, which seem to have to be applied sequentially to the theme and variations. I have added two extra voices, occasionally giving the main tune to treble, tenor or bass, and sometimes using one of the variations as an accompaniment to another. In addition, and in accordance with baroque practice, I have repeated each single 8-bar variation with variations or ornaments of its own. A double bar marks the end of one and beginning of the another; the eight main variations themselves are separated by final bar lines. Tempo marks and dynamics are editorial.
