Faronells Ground (i.e., the violinist Michael Farinel (1649-1726)) first published in The Division Violin (1684), edited by John Playford, and reprinted in The Division Flute (1706), is a staple of the treble recorder repertoire in its standard form of melody plus bass. This is, so far as I can discover, the first arrangement of it for Recorder Quartet. The original is in G minor, which fits the treble comfortably. The same fingering on the descant produces D minor, and this is the key of the present arrangement, which allows the other instruments to sit comfortably within their ranges. I start with melody plus ground bass, unaccompanied. Faronell's 11 movements follow, with each instrument allowed a voice as the variations develop. The top line is always Faronell's, as is the bass, but they are swapped in the instrumental dialogues, which are all my own. Trills in the first presentation of the La Folia tune are original; all other suggestions, including tempi, are editorial. Please ornament at will.
