When night falls he enters the underworld where he does battle with the fierce snake like creature Apep . If he defeats the creature Ra is reborn and the following day will be bright and sunny, and everyone will be optimistic about its prospects. If, however, Ra is defeated, then storm clouds will blight the day and the omens will be dire.
When the sun goes down the inhabitants of Heliopolis head for the entertainment to be found in 'Sun City'. Once Ra's daytime influence has been extinguished the populous let their hair down and relax.
