’Sun God Ra!’, is a collection of songs that follow the mythical journey of Ra as he makes his daily pilgrimage across the sky watching over his loyal Egyptian subjects. When night falls he enters the underworld where he does battle with the fierce snake like creature Apep . If he defeats the creature Ra is reborn and the following day will be bright and sunny, and everyone will be optimistic about its prospects. If, however, Ra is defeated, then storm clouds will blight the day and the omens will be dire.

The ’Heliopolitan Ennead’ are the Gods who form the government overseeing all of Egyptian daily life, leastwise that area of Egypt that was under the influence of Heliopolis, the city of the Sun God Ra. The Gods are all relatives of Ra and have particular responsibilities within this government. This song demonstrates their power and influence within ancient Egypt’s daily life.
