The Shepherds’ Farewell (L’Adieu des Bergers) began life as an organ piece, written in 1850 by French composer Hector Berlioz for a close friend. It was then converted to a choral item, describing the shepherds’ farewell to the infant Jesus as the holy family leave Bethlehem for Egypt. Subsequently, Berlioz added additional movements to the work, which was then published as La Fuite en Egypte (The Flight into Egypt) in 1852. It was premiered in this form in Leipzig in December of the following year.
Many of Berlioz’s works were poorly received. He was inclined to disregard traditional harmonic and structural conventions, resulting in compositions that seemed uncomfortably bizarre to audiences of the time. However, La Fuite en Egypte was a notable exception. Berlioz was encouraged to expand the piece. He added a preceding section, detailing Herod’s instructions to kill all new-born children in Judaea. The resultant tri-partite oratorio was entitled L’Enfance du Christ. The Shepherds’ Farewell undoubtedly remains the best known element of this composition.
