Charles Émile Waldteufel (1837 – 1915) was regarded as a sort of French Johann Strauss II – like Strauss, he led an orchestra at state balls and functions but was also a prolific writer of popular salon pieces. Waldteufel’s popularity soared after the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) heard and enjoyed his work, subsequently promoting this in the UK.
The Skaters’ Waltz, more usually known by its French title of Les Patineurs, or the German Schlittschuhläufer Walzer, was inspired by skaters on the ice rink at the Bois de Boulogne in Paris. It consists of a series of waltzes, as was common at the time. This is a mixed woodwind arrangement of the first of these.
Segments of The Skaters’ Waltz have featured extensively in popular culture, appearing in episodes of television shows as varied as Downton Abbey and Pingu, and in the films My Favourite Wife, Chariots of Fire, My Beautiful Laundrette and Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too, to name but a few.
