The ballet, The Nutcracker, by Russian Romantic composer, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, was first performed in December 1892. It is set beneath a Christmas tree on Christmas Eve, in the imagination of a child. The tale is taken from an 1816 story by E.T.A. Hoffman, who wrote primarily in fantasy and horror genres, which perhaps explains some of the darker elements underlying The Nutcracker.
Tchaikovsky took a number of items from the ballet and turned these into an orchestral suite which could be performed independently. This was premiered well ahead of the ballet itself. The pieces were an instant success, with audiences calling enthusiastically for encores from the very first performance. The Nutcracker Suite opens with a Miniature Overture, followed by 6 Characteristic Dances, of which the March is the first. This woodwind arrangement only includes the primary theme, not the contrasting central section.
Elements of The Nutcracker Suite remain a staple of Christmas concerts in their original form, but have also appeared in a variety of other incarnations, including jazz, boogie, rock and klezmer versions.
