French composer Adolphe Adam (1803 – 1856) wrote primarily for theatre. Today, he is perhaps best remembered for his ballets Giselle and Le Corsaire, but also for his music for the sacred song Cantique de Noёl, or O Holy Night.
O Holy Night is often performed as a Christmas carol, or at the start of midnight mass, as it tells of the night of Jesus Christ’s birth. Year after year, it features among the top tunes in an annual poll for the ‘Nation’s Favourite Christmas Carol’ carried out by radio station, Classic FM.
The original French lyrics to the song were based on a poem written in 1843 to celebrate the renovation of the church organ in Roquemaure, a small town in the Gard region of southern France. Adam set the poem to music later the same year, although the carol was not actually performed in Roquemaure until four years later, in 1847.
O Holy Night is challenging to sing, as it requires a confident performer with a wide vocal range. Nonethless, it has been recorded by many artists including Pavarotti, Mariah Carey, Nat King Cole, Celine Dion, Aled Jones, Charlotte Church, Josh Groban and Michael Crawford, to name but a few. A choral arrangement features on John Williams’ soundtrack to the festive film Home Alone.
