Still, still, still is an Austrian Christmas carol and lullaby. The melody is a folk tune from Salzburg. The tune appeared for the first time in 1865 in a folksong collection of Vinzenz Maria Süß (1802–1868), founder of the Salzburg Museum. The words describe the peace of the infant Jesus and his mother as the baby is sung to sleep. There are various English translations but this one is my own and I have tried to stay close to the original German version supporting the idea of a lullaby, a mother trying to get her baby off to sleep. I have added a fourth verse which is essentially the first verse but with the words changed so that the baby is now sleeping. There are two more verses in German but as they move away from the idea of a mother singing to her child I have not used them. They are included in this document for reference. The carol can be played with just the guitar part but I have added a flute, an oboe and a cello to allow more performers to be used. I have also included a very simple chord chart with the vocal line separately to the main score so that the harmony is clear. This could serve as the basis for another guitar part.
