Catalonia has a great tradition of Christmas carols, rather like Austria. They are secular songs in general, intended to be sung by anybody at any time during the Christmas period and not specifically for use in church. According to the writer Joan Amades (1890-1959), who was curator at the Museu D’Industries I Arts Populars in Barcelona, these Christmas songs were sung by shepherds at the doors of the churches on Christmas Eve, some of the melodies date back to the 15th century.
El Noi De La Mare, here translated as A Mother's Child, is really a lullaby but is so strongly associated with Christmas that it can be considered a carol. It has a great many verses but I have chosen three that I both like and felt I could translate. The essence of all the lyrics are the gifts that you could bring to the infant Jesus and are almost all the fruits of the land, particularly the best of the harvest. The vocal parts are within a comfortable range for Tenor and Baritone, which is how I recorded the carol originally.
