Catalonia has a great tradition of Christmas carols, rather like Austria. They are secular songs in general, intended to be sung by anybody at any time during the Christmas period and not specifically for use in church. According to the writer Joan Amades (1890-1959), who was curator at the Museu D’Industries I Arts Populars in Barcelona, these Christmas songs were sung by shepherds at the doors of the churches on Christmas Eve, some of the melodies date back to the 15th century. As their origin would suggest the lyrics can be very down to earth, like the English Cherry Tree Carol.
The English lyric, as with the Song Of The Birds (Cant Dels Ocells), is not a direct translation though the central elements are the same as the Catalan original. It is more in the nature of an inspiration, it takes the form of a conversation between Mary and Joseph in which Joseph realises that the child Mary is carrying is the son of God. In the Catalan original he needs an angel to point this out to him. The voices in the arrangement have the same format – the higher voice sings Mary’s line and the lower voice sings Joseph’s reply. Together they sing the refrain which changes form ‘world without end’ to ‘God without end’ and finally ‘life without end’.
