"Santa Lucia is a traditional Neapolitan song. It was transcribed by Teodoro Cottrau (1827 - 1879) and published by the Cottrau firm, as a "barcarolla", at Naples in 1849. Cottrau translated it from Napuletano into Italian during the first stage of the Risorgimento, the first Neapolitan song to be given Italian lyrics. Its transcriber, who is very often credited as its composer, was the son of the French-born Italian composer and collector of songs Guillaume Louis Cottrau (1797 - 1847)."
Famous singers who have recorded this in English and Italian over the years include Enrico Caruso, Elvis Presley and of course the great Deano!
This version is nearer to the Barcarolle idea. I wanted to make it pretty and so it includes a lot of Neapolitan style thirds and sixths in the flutes. The flute parts are harder than the guitar which is probably only about grade 2.
For any teachers who are shy of guitars, I have transcribed the guitar part at concert pitch for piano, it should be easy enough to play and will give good practice in reading leger lines. I could have elaborated it into something harder and more pianistic, but I wanted to keep the alberti bass feel of the classical guitar part!
