Recently, I was surprised and delighted to meet at fellow Magdalen man, Luke Berryman, at Boston University, where I'm working towards my doctorate in composition. Having been asked to write a piece for an upcoming recital of Luke's, I wrote 'Possible Worlds', a meditation both on the memorable bell chimes of Magdalen tower, and on the pure randomness of meeting a Magdalen graduate so far from home.
I was based briefly in Antigua city, Guatemala and so, in the course of this piece, various central American birds make an appearance.
I am grateful beyond measure to Luke for learning this challenging piece, and for performing its premier at a Composer's Concert at Boston University in October 2008.
