Less a ’nocturne’ in the later, romantic, sense than a short serenade to be played duting the evening, this Notturno by the Austrian composer and violinist Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf, contemporary of Haydn and Mozart, is a fascinating and rare work for 4 transverse flutes. It has odd moments of typical mid-century quirkiness (e.g., the abrupt forte/piano changes of Sturm und Drang) and a good amount of melodic charm. Transcribed from the MS in the Danish Royal Library, with editorial tempo indications and a few corrections, but with dynamics and slurs (with a few exceptions) as marked in the original.
