This descant is to be sung to the original organ accompaniment. Whereas when you sing the melody you have to sing "th'eternal" in the chorus, in this descant you should sing "the eternal" – i.e. without the elision. You will probably find it helpful to write in the words for your choristers so that she understand that, in the descant, the chorus text begins in bar 8, whereas those singing the melody start the chorus in bar 9.
