At least, I am unaware of any flute transcription of this lovely viola da gamba sonata; though William Bennett played his (unpublished, I believe) arrangement in a memorably beautiful performance at the Wigmore Hall in 1985. I have dedicated this arrangement to the memory of Richard William Lee (born 1941), who died of cancer in his twenties. With his death we lost one of the great flautists. He was a pupil of Geoffrey Gilbert; but I knew him at school in London in the 1950s, where he was already a superb flautist and recorder player and rapidly becoming an expert on baroque music. He also played the guitar, and made his own treble viol, which he occasionally played in the school orchestra. Subsequently, he played the recorder with David Munrow. I knew him for only a few short years.
