Its three verses are usually sung to the tune Lux Benigna (Kindly Light) composed by John Bacchus Dykes (1823-1876) in 1865, however there are other melodies such as Alberta, by William H Harris and Sandon which was composed by Charles Henry Purday (1799-1885) in 1857. Lead, Kindly Light was sung by a soloist on the RMS Titanic during a hymn-singing gathering led by Rev. Ernest C. Carter, shortly before the ocean liner struck an iceberg on April 14, 1912, but it is not known which setting was used on the ill-fated liner. Several eminant composers of Anglican church music have set Newmans text as Anthems, including this setting by Sir John Stainer (1840-1901), the English composer and organist whose music, though not generally greatly admired today (with the possible exception of The Crucifixion,) was much performed during his lifetime.
