CROTCH, William (b. Norwich, July 5, 1775-d. Taunton, Dec 29, 1847) English organist, theorist and composer; displayed uncommon musical precocity, playing the organ in public when he was four; became organist of Christ Church, Oxford, at fifteen, and received the degree of Mus. B. four years later. At 22 he was organist of St. Johns College, and professor of music in the University. He was appointed principal of the Royal Academy of Music when it was founded in 1822, and retained that post for ten years. Among his works are two oratorios, Palestine (which contained his anthem Lo, Star-led Chiefs, still frequently heard) and The Captivity of Judah; many anthems, organ fugues and concertos, piano pieces, etc. He also published a handbook on composition.
