The Irish composer, conductor and teacher Sir Charles Villiers Stanford began his musical studies with OLeary and Stewart, and in 1870 became a choral scholar at Queens College, Cambridge. When he was made organist of Trinity College and conductor of the Cambridge University Musical Society in 1873 where he made a name for himself as an able leader, bringing the society into high repute, he took classical honours in the following year. Stanford became professor of composition at the Royal College of Music where Vaughan Williams and Herbert Howells numbered amongst his pupils. He was a prolific composer in many forms, and his works bespeak his Irish decent in their colouring.
