Gordon Heard aged 17 won an Open Scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music and University of London. His flute teachers included his grandfather Walter Heard, Geoffrey Gilbert and Caratge in Paris. His teachers for composition were Herbert Howells and Gordon Jacob. He was appointed principal flautist of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra when he was 20 and later played with all the major London symphony orchestras. His broadcast performance of Nielsen's flute concerto with the BBC Scottish Orchestra, later issued as a recording, was described by Robert Simpson as "a fine performance…..(and) got inside it very well."
