You can imagine him as a shepherd sitting down, looking up at the sky and reflecting. Here in front of him was a huge world with the glory of God shining on him. He was considering why a God so big, who could make an amazing world, would have any interest in him! Even compared to the vastness of the universe, God still cares about us and we are given greater importance to him than any planet. The importance of human beings starts in Genesis 1 and 2 when God says we are made in his image and are stewards for the whole of his creation.
Hebrews 2: 8 refers back to Psalm 8 and mentions “We do not, however, see human beings ruling over all things now”. Over time, Satan has prevented humans doing their work as God intended and the knock on effect is the earth showing physical signs of damage and neglect. From a spiritual perspective, sin has separated us from the Father which required him to send Jesus to rescue us. Only through Jesus can we be a new creation and one day we will be made perfect as the Father intended and share with God’s glory for all eternity.
This psalm talks about how God cares deeply for mankind and wants a personal relationship with each of us. Given our insignificance when compared to him, it makes it all the more amazing that a holy God would have an interest in us!
