Throughout the early books of Isaiah, there is continually a mix of prophecy on judgement followed by prophecy on restoration. In chapter 12, Isaiah brings this first part of prophecies to a close with a look towards eternity and the time when Christians will fully worship God. I’ve mainly used the Good News bible in the writing of this song as the words painted a strong picture.
In this song, both verses start with a description of the gratitude and praise Christians will feel stirred within them when they are completely and truly aware of their salvation. The beginning of Verse 1 reminds us about being free of God’s anger as the Christian receives forgiveness through the death and resurrection of Jesus. As a result of what Jesus has done, our relationship with God the Father is restored – he is fully trustworthy and we can depend on him – with his power, we do not need to be afraid.
The first part of the chorus paints a vivid picture of salvation as Christians find the answer to their spiritual thirst – “As fresh water brings great joy to the thirsty so God’s people will rejoice when he saves them”. Isaiah 12:3. There is a real sense of exuberance with people singing and shouting for joy for the work God has done in their lives. It is a joy which is overflowing with hearts lifted. What a challenge to us while we are still here on earth!
The second verse encourages us to go to God for help in any situation. God wants to be in a full relationship with him through both the good times and the bad. We are also called to tell others about this “living water” so all can be saved. “Let the whole world hear the news” Isaiah 12:5.
