The dance-like nature of the movement and the playful, simple harmonies help suggest the joyful mood. The middle section repeats the 'love' theme from the 2nd movement with slight variation and the end of the work sees the return of music from each movement played at the same time. The sonata exist in an orchestral version written in June 2000. The piano and flute version was first performed in May 2000 by Louise Taylor, Ruth Hopkins and Guy Bunce.
