The piece opens in its home key, but by the end of its first half has modulated to the dominant, or a similar related key. There is then a repeat. The second half begins where the first half left off, and eventually the key returns to that of the opening. The second half is also repeated, though, especial in the exam scenario, neither half is repeated.
These two consecutive Sonatas in C, the first at a fairly steady pace, while the second is faster, are set as acceptable repertoire Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music ARSM Piano Diploma.
For this exam, both sonatas must be played, but not necessarily consecutively, or in numerical order, but can be slotted in as necessary into the 30-minute-long programme.
They're not the most exciting sonatas he wrote, but neither are they especially difficult to play, either!
